Healing in community: releasing immigrant daughter shame

healing immigrant daughter shame event

For many daughters of immigrants, navigating multiple worlds often comes with a hidden weight: shame. This shame isn’t something we chose but something that quietly took root through cultural expectations, unspoken family dynamics, and the desire to fit in. As we try to balance our identities between family, friends, and society, we often end up carrying feelings of inadequacy, secrecy, and self-doubt. On December 1st, Heal Magazine invites you to a special 90-minute online workshop, Healing Immigrant Daughter Shame, designed to help release these burdens and reconnect with our authentic self.

Understanding immigrant daughter shame

The experience of being a daughter of immigrants is layered. Often, we feel a deep responsibility to honor our family’s sacrifices while also forging our own paths. This can lead to a “double life,” where we present different versions of ourselves depending on our surroundings. We may find ourselves constantly toggling between family expectations and personal desires, all while trying to “belong” in spaces that may not fully understand our experiences. This split can make us feel fragmented, as if parts of ourselves are hidden or “wrong.”

Healing Immigrant Daughter Shame is about more than acknowledging this split—it’s about reclaiming the parts of ourselves we’ve buried or deemed unworthy. In this workshop, led by trauma-integrative counselor and healer Jessie, we’ll come together as a community to examine these patterns and begin to heal.

What to expect from the workshop

Jessie, a compassionate and experienced counselor, will guide you through a thoughtful journey that respects the unique experiences of immigrant daughters. In this interactive session, we’ll explore the roots of shame, secrecy, and self-silencing that many of us have inherited. Jessie will lead a reflective discussion on how this shame impacts our lives, followed by an opportunity for sharing. Each participant is encouraged to share only as much as they feel comfortable with; cameras are optional, and there is no pressure to speak if that doesn’t feel right.

The workshop will conclude with a guided healing exercise designed to help you release some of the shame you may have been carrying. This exercise will provide tools to approach yourself with greater compassion, acceptance, and strength. The goal is for you to leave feeling a bit lighter, more connected to your authentic self, and more aligned with your inner resilience.
